I installed ADLL and only have access to the sample lights data?
You need to enter the Start-Up Key supplied by your Admiralty Distributor. If the CD was supplied without a Start-Up Key, you should contact your Distributor to purchase a Start-Up Key.

From the ADLL toolbar select File – Licence Key Wizard, select Next to display the Licence Key Wizard – Add Key screen and enter the key details. A useful tip is to always use Copy and Paste (Ctrl&C/Ctrl&V) when entering key details. If an error has been made when entering the key the Licence Key Wizard – Unable to add Keys screen will be displayed – if this happens the key needs to be re-entered correctly.

Select Next to display the Licence Key Wizard – Start-Up Key Only screen which shows the areas you have licensed and their current expiry date.

If you wish to request an Activation Key now, select the appropriate button and select Next (see below for details), if you wish to exit select Close.

Which Flag State has approved Admiralty Digital List of Lights as covering the carriage requirement?
Please see the Flag State Approval table for this product.

I obtained a Start-Up Key for ADLL but it expired before I installed the program – how can I obtain an Activation Key?
The Start-Up Key can always be used to install ADLL, even if the Key has expired. However, the Start-Up Key will not allow you to display any Light information beyond its 1 month expiry date and it will not allow you to apply any updates. You can obtain an Activation Key at any time after installing ADLL.

How do I obtain an Activation Key by email?
From the ADLL toolbar select File – Licence Key Wizard to display the Licence Key Wizard – Start-Up Key Only screen. Select the Request an Activation Key button and select Next. The Licence Key Wizard – Main or Backup computer screen is displayed showing your computer name. Select the “MAIN” computer button and select Next.

The Licence Key Wizard – Create Activation Key Request screen is displayed; select the Email icon and this will generate an email which is addressed to ADLL@ukho.gov.uk. In the subject line there will be a string of letters and numbers beginning with UKHOADLLAKR…… Do not amend any of this at all. Just click on the Send button. You will receive an email back with details of your Activation Key.

How do I install my Activation Key?
From the ADLL toolbar select File – Licence Key Wizard to display the Licence Key Wizard – Start-Up Key Only screen. Select the Add an Activation Key button and select Next to display the Licence Key Wizard – Add Key screen and enter the key details. A useful tip is to always use Copy and Paste (Ctrl&C/Ctrl&V) when entering key details.

If an error has been made when entering the key the Licence Key Wizard – Unable to add Keys screen will be displayed – if this happens the key needs to be re-entered correctly. If the key still fails it may be because there has been a change to the hardware configuration – see below for further details.

Select Next to display the Licence Key Wizard – Activated screen which shows the Licensed Areas. Select Close to finish.

When the Activation Key has been installed, update your Area Data Files using the Update Data Wizard and the latest ADLL Weekly Update CD – see below.

The PC on which I am going to run ADLL does not have email facilities. How can I obtain my Activation Key?
From the Licence Key Wizard – Create Activation Key Request screen you can choose the option Send the Request to your printer or Save the Request to a simple text file. You can then manually type your Activation Key request into the subject line of an email on another PC and send it to ADLL@ukho.gov.uk or copy and paste it from a floppy disc into the subject line of an email and send it. The Activation Key will be returned to the email address that sent in the Activation Key Request. Alternatively you can send the Activation Key request details to your Admiralty Distributor and ask them to submit the request on your behalf.

How do I obtain my Activation Key for my back-up PC?
Load the latest version of ADLL onto your back up PC. Use the Licence Key Wizard to insert your original Start-Up Key and generate a new Activation Key request from this machine, ensuring that “BACKUP” computer button has been selected.

When the Activation Key has been installed, update your Area Data Files using the Update Data Wizard and the latest ADLL Weekly Update CD – see below.

Can ADLL be installed on a networked PC?
ADLL may not be installed centrally on a network server. It can however be installed on the local hard drive of a machine which is linked to a network. If the PC is also a server, the programme cannot be accessed via a different PC which has the server mapped as a drive. The software is ‘tied’ to the PC on which it is loaded and can only be accessed on this machine.

My computer has been replaced/ upgraded, how do I re-install ADLL?
Load the latest version of ADLL on your PC. Use the Licence Key Wizard to insert your original Start-Up Key and generate a new Activation Key request from this machine, ensuring that the appropriate type “MAIN” or “BACKUP” computer has been selected to ensure the correct key is cancelled.

Under normal conditions, your request will be scrutinised and authorised within a few minutes, and a replacement Activation Key automatically generated and emailed back to you.

Occasionally, Activation Key requests may be refused by the UKHO – if this happens you will need to contact either your Admiralty Distributor or the UKHO Helpdesk – helpdesk@ukho.gov.uk explaining the situation and enclosing either your Start-Up Key, Activation Key, Update Key or User Permit and Computer Name.

When the new Activation Key has been installed, update your Area Data Files using the Update Data Wizard and the latest ADLL Weekly Update CD – see below.

How do I update the Area Data Files on my PC?
You can only update the Area Data Files on your PC once an Activation Key has been installed.

If the program has been re-installed on a replacement PC or has been installed on a back-up PC and the Area Data Files are more than six-months-old, it is recommended that you use the ADLL Weekly Update CD to initially update your Area Data Files.

From the ADLL toolbar select File – Update Data Wizard, this displays the Current State of the loaded Area Data Files. When Next is selected the following choices are displayed – select the appropriate Option and continue as shown:

a. Update from the ADLL weekly CD – insert the CD, browse to the correct CD location and select Next, select Next to install the updates then select Close to finish.

b. Request an update to be sent via Email – highlight which area(s) are to be updated and select Next.

If Email the request now is chosen select Next followed by Finish. An email with the subject line ADLLUR is created with an attachment containing the update request details in a text file. The email will automatically be sent to ADLL@ukho.gov.uk.

Note that there is also the facility to select the Check for Email Updates box – this will allow the ADLL program to automatically check the inbox on a regular basis for new updates.

If Store the request in a file … is chosen, browse to a suitable location, insert an appropriate file name and select Finish. This file can then be transferred to a PC with email facilities and can be sent as an attachment to an email with ADLLUR in the subject line to ADLL@ukho.gov.uk.

c. Import an update file obtained via Email or downloaded from the UKHO web site - If via Email on this computer is chosen, select Next, highlight the Email (ensure that it has been marked as unread), select Next to install the updates then select Close to finish.

If An Email attachment from another computer or downloaded from the web is chosen select Next, browse to the correct location and highlight the appropriate file and select Next, select Next to install the updates then select Close to finish.

Note that lights update files have a .luf extension if supplied by email and a .adllu extension if supplied from the website.

d. Update automatically over the internet – highlight which area(s) are to be updated and select Next, select Next to install the updates then select Close to finish.

e. Connect to the UKHO website to manually download update files – select the week that you wish to update from (Note - ensure that the correct week has been selected as the update will fail if the wrong week has been selected – see Note below), select the area(s) to be updated, and select submit update request. Select either individual area update files to download or select a single file that contains all your updates, browse to select a location and select save. Note that if a single file that contains all your updates has been selected this will be supplied as a self extracting Zip file. When the file has been transferred to the PC with ADLL, double click the file to extract individual area update files which should then be used in option c above.

Note that if an incorrect weekly update date has been supplied then the error ‘This update file cannot be used because it does not follow on from your current data’ will be displayed when the data file is updated in option c above.

My ADLL program was working fine but now it won't work at all. I have an Activation key but I have a message saying that the key cannot be decoded correctly?
When you generate an Activation Key Request, this captures hardware details about the host PC which locks the Activation Key to the PC. If you have made any changes to your hardware or changed your PC since the generation of your Activation Key request, this will invalidate your Activation Key. Use the Licence Key Wizard to generate a new Activation Key request from this machine, ensuring that the relevant MAIN or BACKUP computer button has been selected.

If you are running a MAIN and a BACK UP system, ensure that the correct key is used on the correct PC.

How do I add extra Area Data Files to my Licence?
You need to give your Admiralty Distributor your User Permit number and he will arrange this for you. On either your MAIN or BACK UP system go to the ADLL toolbar, select File – Licence Key Wizard, select the button Add Areas/Renew Licence and select Next.

The Licence Key Wizard – User Permit screen is displayed which contains your User Permit, current areas and expiry date. Select Next to display the Licence Key Wizard – Export User Permit with the options to copy to clipboard, print or save to a floppy disc.

Provide your Distributor with the User Permit and the areas you wish to add, your Distributor will respond with an Update Key. Note that separate Update keys will be supplied for both the MAIN and the BACK UP systems.

To enter the Update Key select File – Licence Key Wizard, select the button Add another Key and select Next. A useful tip is to always use Copy and Paste (Ctrl&C/Ctrl&V) when inserting Keys.

If additional Area Data Files are purchased during the year then the cost will be determined on when the existing licence commenced (all area data files expire at the same time). If additional areas are purchased during:

months 1 -3: the cost is £44
months 4-6: the cost is £33
months 7-9: the cost is £22
months 10-12: the cost is £11

I want to renew my Area Data Files?
You need to give your Admiralty Distributor your User Permit number and they will arrange this for you.

Provide your Distributor with your User Permit and which Area Data Files you wish to renew. The Distributor will send in a request for an Update Key, and you will receive the latest ADLL Weekly Update CD together with your Update Key(s). Note that separate Update keys will automatically be supplied for both the MAIN and the BACK UP systems.

To enter the Update Key select File – Licence Key Wizard, select the button Add another Key and select Next. A useful tip is to always use Copy and Paste (Ctrl&C/Ctrl&V) when inserting Keys.

How much will it cost me to renew my Area Data Files?
Each Area Data File costs £44 to renew.

I have lost access to my lights data – I have an error message ‘Unable to access a file correctly - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Chersoft\List of Lights\...\areas1and2.adll was not found’?
The update process has failed at some stage. In order to recover the situation it will be necessary to update using an ADLL Weekly Update CD as shown above.

If this doesn't resolve the problem, create a Support Text, as shown below, and send to the UKHO Helpdesk – helpdesk@ukho.gov.uk with a full description of your problem and they will advise further.

I have received a new Admiralty Digital List of Lights CD - what do I do next?
Install the CD in the same way that you installed your original CD. Your current Activation Key will still be valid so you will not have to use the Licence Key Wizard.

When I open ADLL my search function on the Menu Bar is 'greyed out'?
This problem occurs when the List View has been removed. To create a new List View select Windows – New List from the ADLL toolbar.

When I open ADLL I cannot see a List View or a Filter View?
This problem occurs when these Views have been removed. To insert new Views select Windows - New List or New Filter from the ADLL toolbar.

ADLL Updates us ing the ChartCo service?
If updates have been applied using the ChartCo Service and the error message: 'This update file cannot be used because it does not follow on from your current data' is displayed, you will need to update your system via one of the UKHO Update options using the ADLL Update Data Wizard.

Unlike the ADLL updates, ChartCo updates are not cumulative and have to be applied on a weekly basis. To correct the problem, update your ADLL using one of the methods described above and then continue to use the ChartCo Service on a weekly basis.

I wish to send the UKHO Helpdesk a Support Text?
From the ADLL toolbar select Help - About List of Lights - Support. You will be given a choice of: send an email; save in text file; print the message or copy the message to the clipboard. If possible select the first option. This will generate an email which gives a 'dump' of the registry settings. Forward the email to the UKHO Helpdesk – helpdesk@ukho.gov.uk with a full description of your problem and they will advise further.
